Who is behind 3594 Miles?
We are three high-school friends from Vietnam: Rio Lam, Zi Nguyen, and Iris Le. Back in November 2012, while chilling out at White Rock lake, it came to our mind that we should write and capture the American life in the eyes of us as three Vietnamese girls living away from home. We decided to name that book “Get Lost. Be Found.” as a symbol for what we have been going through during the time of our youth in the States.
The designs in this post are made by a Chinese designer living in Germany, Yang Liu and I got hold of them from Lonnie’s post. He in turn got them from Adino Chang‘s post. These pictures were part of an art exhibition held in Germany in June 2007. The picture captions are in very tiny writing on the top left hand side, and I have mentioned some of these.
I found these pictures brilliant, as they explain the differences between the East and West in a way that words never could. Although Yang Liu orginally made them to show the differences between Germany (where she lives) and China, Germany could easily be the West and China could represent the East. At times I have used the term West instead of Germany and East instead of China, but this may not necessarily be so. Quite a few of the pictures used to represent China could represent the Indian way of life pretty well.

There is a time in every man’s day when his Facebook feed spits out a photo of a friend who has turned a smartphone camera on him or herself. There is the practiced tilt of the head, to avoid additional chins. There is the palm tree or infinity pool in the background, to record momentary privilege. There is the artfully arranged cleavage, or the casually flexed triceps, to establish oneself as fit, desirable, deserving of exhibition in the carousel museum of social media.

The inspirational and famously short Gettysburg Address was praised for reinvigorating national ideals of freedom, liberty and justice amid a Civil War that had torn the country into pieces.
